Hello Silver Hill Families!
Wow! My first Weekend Update for the 2018-2019 school year…I’ve had a wonderful summer but must admit I’m looking forward to having the kiddos back! And I bet you are, too JI hope everyone is enjoying a fun filled summer. It does fly by!
I wanted to send out a summer letter to give you some information on upcoming dates and events to slowly ease you back into the school routine.
First…It is with pleasure that I announce Brendon Parker as Silver Hill’s new Assistant Principal. Brendon is not new to Haverhill. He grew up here, graduated from HHS, taught at Golden Hill, and served as an Assistant Principal at JG Whittier and Consentino. For the last five years Brendon has been the Dean of Students at Marsh Grammar School in Methuen, a Pre-K – 8 school with 1350 students. His focus as Dean included academic curriculum and also PBIS implementation and data analysis and positive discipline. Brendon also worked with the guidance team to develop a “mental health aware environment”. With his background in working on Social-Emotional Learning, he is a perfect fit for our school community. He’s a hands on leader and is even looking forward to monitoring our lunches and recesses! (Yes, he really did say that!) I am excited about working together as an administrative team and welcome him to the Silver Hill community. If you have a chance in the next few weeks stop by and say hello, or introduce yourself at Open House.
To communicate with our families we will be frequently updating our web site. https://silverhill.haverhill-ps.org I will also be sending my Weekend (Sometimes Mid Week) Updates. Please use this web site as a reference for school information including calendar events, classroom news, resources from our specialists, and a link to PTO. Please let me know if there is something that you’d like us to include on our web page. Frequent communication with our families is always our goal!
Our Open House will be on August 27, from 3:30 – 5:00. A flyer is attached. Hope to see you all there!
The first day of school for grades 1-5 is Tuesday, August 28. Our school day begins at 9:00, students may begin arriving at 8:30. We do not have staff on hand before 8:30, so for the safety of your child/children we ask that you please do not drop them off before that time. Thank you in advance!
We will continue to house the YMCA program for before and after school child care from 6:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. I have met with their director to increase the number of students they can enroll, so hopefully we’ll have more spaces. Friday, August 31 is an early release day to begin our Labor Day Recess. Early Birds will be dismissed at 11:15, kindergarten walkers at 11:25, and each grade level about every five minutes after, starting with grade 1. No lunches are served on Early Release days.
Please be patient with buses for the first week or so. It takes a while to get the routes down, so the times may not be exact. IT has posted the neighborhood lines on the HPS web site and is working with the bus companies to include bus number assignments. Until then, Coppolla buses will have routes set in time for Open House. To find out your school neighborhood, go to the HPS web site under Transportation, https://www.haverhill-ps.org/transportation/school-assignments-by-street/ and type in your street name/number.
Kindergarten screenings will take place on August 28 – 30. I’ll be sending home the Welcome to Kindergartenpacket this week that will include assigned teachers, screening appointment times and lots of kindergarten information.
It’s going to be a great new school year at Silver Hill Elementary School!

September 5 – 9:00 – Full day of school K-5
September 10 – Picture Day (October 22 – Retake Day)
September 10 – PTO Meeting – 6:00 p.m.
September 12 – Early Release for Students – Staff Professional Development
