October Update !!!

October 25, 2018

Dear Silver Hill Families,

Tomorrow is Red Sox Day! Wear your colors to cheer on the winning team!

Trick or Treating in Haverhill has been moved from Saturday to Sunday night from 5-7, anticipating some bad weather on Saturday. Silver Hill does not have a costume day, and we ask that parents/guardians do not send children to school wearing costumes. We DO have an Orange and Black Day on October 31st, so wear your Halloween colors that day!

The City has decided to reschedule Trick Or Treat to this Sunday, Oct. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m.  As we all know, it was originally scheduled for this Saturday. But we are moving it due to forecasts of heavy rain and wind Saturday evening. According to the National Weather Service, the chance of better weather is more likely Sunday night.  Happy Halloween!!!

Tomorrow is our first ROARS (Respect, Ownership, Attitude, Responsibility, Safety) assembly to recognize students who have gone above and beyond to consistently show RESPECT at school. Our ROARS assemblies are part of our Social-Emotional Curriculum, using the PBIS model. Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a program for schools to encourage good behavior and improve school safety. We believe that ever child can learn proper behavior. With PBIS, children learn about positive behavior, just as they learn other subjects like math or science. Letters have gone home to the parents/guardians of students who will be receiving an award at tomorrow’s assembly. Congratulations to those students and their parents/guardians!

Some parents have asked about Progress Reports. Silver Hill uses a standards based report card, and will continue to do so. With standards based reporting, there are no progress reports. The grading is based on trimester reporting. There may be confusion if a family has received a “progress report” developed by an individual teacher. Silver Hill teachers may use their own form of communicating. Mr. Parker has been updating our web page, and staff have a direct link to their email on the Silver Hill Staff page. https://silverhill.haverhill-ps.org/shhmcs-staff/

This would be a good way to keep in touch with your child’s teacher. Parents/guardians are always encouraged to e-mail or call the teacher if they would like to discuss their child’s progress!

And…last but not least, please do not allow your child/children to bring balls from home. We have had several children hurt after being hit with hard balls. We provide all the necessary recess equipment, chosen by our physical education teacher, Mr. Murphy. Mr. Murphy takes frequent inventory on the equipment, and will be sure that there is always enough safe equipment to keep our students active.

Full moon AND Trick or Treating all in one week! Wow!
