Jaguar Journal 02-12-23

Hello Silver Hill Families,Happy Superbowl Sunday! I hope you all are well!

HPS Maintenance and Silver Hill Custodians worked diligently this week to repair the broken heaters and pipes, as well as clean up all water and ensure there is no mold in the classrooms. We are fortunate that the days have been on the warmer side, and the building has been plenty warm for both students and staff. Most classrooms were finished, with 105, 200, and the art and music rooms being worked on over the weekend. I will give you additional updates as I receive information. I am also very thankful to staff and students for being so flexible this week when classes needed to relocate or the specials classes needed to be in the classroom. Such a wonderful community!

The K-2 Sweetheart Dance was SO MUCH FUN! <3 Thank you to the PTO and to all parents and staff who attended the dance and helped to run the activities! It was a great success and the students looked SO happy! We are looking forward to the 3-5 dance on Friday, March 10th.

Reminder – The Kid’s Heart Challenge continues this week: Silver Hill’s event is kicking off on 2/06/2023 and will conclude on 2/17/2023. Donations will be due by 3/03/2023. Please see more information below.

Other Previous Updates and Information:

Cell Phone Policy – We have seen an uptick of inappropriate phone use at school. Here is a reminder of our expectations at Silver Hill:

“Cell phones must be shut off and stored in backpacks during school hours. They may not be used at any time during the school day, including lunch and recess.

If they are seen by a classroom teacher, staff, etc. the phone will be confiscated and turned into the main office. The device can be picked up at the office by the student at the end of the school day. Repeated offenses may require the parent to pick up the device and/or require the student to drop it off daily at the office.”

Valentine’s Day – Some classes may recognize this day with crafts, games, or stories about friendship. If you do choose to send in Valentines for your child’s class, please be sure there is one for each classmate. Also, PLEASE DO NOT SEND IN FOOD OR CANDY OF ANY KIND. There are several students with allergies and we need to keep everyone safe. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Book Fair – The Book Fair will be coming to the Silver Hill Library the week of February 13-17. Please see more information below and coming home in backpacks this week.

Book Fair Volunteers Needed! – Here is the link to the Sign-Up Genius for family members to volunteer:

Lost and Found – We still have a LARGE NUMBER of sweatshirts, coats, water bottles, etc. in the Lost and Found. Please have your children check for anything they may be missing. If items remain unclaimed, ****they will be donated after February Vacation.****

Grade 5 Bake Sale Fundraiser on February 16th

5th GRADE BAKE SALE FUNDRAISER

In an effort to raise funds for an end of the year activity, the 5th grade will be hosting a Bake Sale during Parent/Teacher Conferences on February 16th.

If you would like to donate items for the event, please use the following google sheet to let us know what you’ll be donating.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
VENTA DE PASTELES PARA RECAUDACIÓN DE FONDOS DE 5º GRADO
En un esfuerzo por recaudar fondos para una actividad de fin de año, el 5º grado organizará una venta de pasteles durante las conferencias de padres y maestros el 16 de febrero.
Si desea donar artículos para el evento, utilice la siguiente hoja de Google para informarnos qué donará.
Bake Sale Donations 2/16
Progress Reports – Progress Reports for Semester 2 will be released on Tuesday, February 14th instead of Tuesday, February 7th. This was a districtwide decision K-8 to allow an extra week for teachers to gather student data to share with you both in progress reports and parent conferences on 2/16.
Safety at Dismissal Time – There have been an increasing amount of car driving in during pick-up time that do not enter the car pick-up line but instead park illegally in the bus lanes or faculty parking lot. Please DO NOT continue this practice. This makes it very challenging for the buses to get through. Additionally, students run across the parking lot to meet their rides which is very dangerous.
  • If you are walking to pick up a child, please meet them at the front of the school.
  • If you are picking up a child in the car, please get in the car pick-up line.
  • We appreciate your attention to this matter. The safety of our students and everyone in the Silver Hill community is our number one priority!
Please be sure your children come to school with warm coats, hats, and gloves. We will be having outdoor recess as much as possible through the winter and we want to be sure all are protected from the colder weather!
**Please also be sure to send your children with snacks for snacktime.**
Take care and be well.
Sincerely,
Donna Martin, Principal
The Book Fair is Coming!
THE BOOK FAIR IS COMING!
Dear Parents and Families:
Get ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!). Choosing their own books
empowers kids and inspires them to become Bolder, Prouder, and Stronger Readers. AND—as
always—every book they buy earns rewards for our school.
Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from Monday, February 13,
2023, to Friday, February 17, 2023, during students’ Library period in our school Library.
This year, say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet—your child’s digital payment account.
Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute!
Share each child’s eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to
enjoy.
Cash will still be accepted during the fair as well as credit cards during conferences on Thursday, February 16, 2023 from 5-6:30 pm.
If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Online Book Fair. All orders ship
directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Your online orders will also
benefit our school.
Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping:
Haverhill Community Youth Sports and Activities Directory
HAVERHILL COMMUNITY YOUTH SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES DIRECTORY
Mr. Murphy and the HPS Wellness Dept have created a simple directory of available opportunities throughout Haverhill, in an effort to increase participation and foster healthy lifestyles. We are calling it the Haverhill Community Youth Sports and Activities Directory (HCYSA). Their aim is to help build awareness, accessibility, and participation in local youth sports and activities programs. They believe that physical activity plays a key role in a child’s development because it doesn’t just develop the body. Playing, running, jumping, sports, dance, and all forms of exercise play a role in a child’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Please note that the HPS Wellness Dept is not affiliated with any of the opportunities provided.
Click the links below to find out more information about opportunities throughout the greater Haverhill area.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS!
For Elementary/PreK/K School Parents:
Showing up matters for R.E.A.L because it is an opportunity to:
  • Build Routines
  • Increase Engagement
  • Provide Access to resources
  • Support Learning
RoutinesDaily attendance routines can reduce stress, increase your child’s self-confidence, and lay a foundation for good attendance in later grades.
EngagementParticipation in school helps your child connect with other children and adults and get excited about learning.
Access to ResourcesSchools can give you access to meals, physical and mental health care and other supports, and fun enrichment activities (sports, clubs, music, afterschool, and summer programs, etc.).
Learning: Children learn best from hand-on activities and through meaningful interactions with their teacher and other students.
A reminder that it is very important for your child to be on time to school each day! Please reach out to your child’s teacher or school adjustment counselor if you need any support with getting your child to school.
