Hello Silver Hill Families,
I hope everyone is having a nice weekend.
Thank you again to the PTO for sponsoring another fun Friday Night at Launch Trampoline Park! I was unable to attend this event but heard it was a great time with a HUGE Jaguar turnout!
On Friday, February 14th, Silver Hill will hold a lollipop fundraiser to help support more fun and educational activities for our students. Lollipops will be on sale for $1.00 at the ROARS assembly for parents to purchase and at lunch for ALL students to purchase.
February is Black History Month and many things are going on around the school to help celebrate, acknowledge, and learn more about many heroes that have helped fight for and create more unity and equality among all! Many classrooms are working on biographies, with a focus on the important character traits of the people they chose to research. 4th grade is tying into their Social Studies unit of the Southeast region and are researching/discussing such things as slavery and jazz music! One 5th grade class I was able to visit with last week, was working on a monthly calendar. Each day, they read about a different person or event and complete a short task to help bring more awareness and understanding to each. Many aspects of Black History Month go along nicely with our Social Emotional lessons to increase empathy, integrity, and determination for all!

Hello Silver Hill Families,
Mayor Fiorentini visits Grade 1 at Silver Hill.
I hope everyone is having a nice weekend.
Over the past few weeks our EL students have completed their ACCESS testing to monitor their listening, speaking, and comprehension skills. Ms Carleton, Ms Herbert, Ms Edwards, Ms Todd, and Ms Bouchard worked diligently to help all of our students through this testing cycle. The students were amazing and truly gave it their best efforts! Great job by all!
This past week, Mayor Fiorentini was kind enough to make a visit with a few of our classrooms. He shared in a Harmony lesson on various emotions that we all share, happy, disappointed, and scared to name a few with Ms Kornachuk and Ms Gagnon’s first grade classrooms. The Mayor was even a BUDDY-UP partner with one lucky first grade student to share times when they have experienced each of the emotions mentioned.
I was unable to take part in but was shown videos of grade 5 students in Mrs Poulin’s classroom during a Buddy-Up activity where students had to teach their “Buddy” something they did not know how to do. In Ms Kelly’s words, “kids were beyond engaged! They taught sign language, how to make clay crafts, magic tricks, soccer dribbling, drawing, and of course awesome dance moves!” These activities are helping our students feel more connected and a sense of belonging which will in-turn help them to succeed academically as well.
The book orders for our previous guest, Cory Jones have been placed. We will send home with the students as soon as they arrive at school. We will have extra order forms at school if you missed the deadline. You can have the book sent right to your home.

Your consideration is deeply appreciated.

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to all of our Silver Hill families!
Our staff did a nice job incorporating Martin Luther King, Jr and his ideals into lessons over the past few weeks. I saw many classrooms reading and writing about MLK throughout this past week especially. Being home today allowed me an opportunity to reflect on more ways to better spread Martin Luther King, Jr.’s message of unity and acceptance for all. I believe our assembly with Basketball Jones was a nice start as well to build stronger character for our school community. Just thought I would also share some wonderful books on social justice that you could share with your children at home as well. Some of these were already read in school but can provide a great way to reinforce various skills at home including but not limited to reading, listening, writing, and character building.

In the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. ,

Hello Silver Hill Families,
I hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful long weekend. Last Thursday Silver Hill was very fortunate to have an amazing assembly presented by Basketball “Corey” Jones. He provided a show with basketball tricks, motivation for students to draw and write their own stories, and many inspiring messages to motivate students to be the best they can be! Here are just a few of the responses from several students who wrote thank you notes to express their appreciation for the assembly.
“Thank you for bringing Corey Jones into our school and putting on that awesome show! My favorite part was EVERYTHING! I am going to try and have more patience like Corey said! That will make me more awesome.” (Elsa G – grade 4)
“Thank you for bringing in Basketball Jones. He was very fun and taught us a lesson about being kind and patient. He rewarded us for trying and giving our best effort. He was very good at tricks and he has tons of energy!” (Aaron P. – grade 4)
Cory Jones also wrote and illustrated a comic book, “HOW TO SHOOT A BASKETBALL” which is available for sale for $5. If anyone is interested please send your payment in to the classroom teacher and students should receive a signed copy within a week of Jan 24th. Thank you to the PTO for helping to make this assembly possible!

Happy New Year Silver Hill Families,
I hope everyone had a wonderful winter vacation and is ready to get back into the swing of school. We have many exciting things to do and learn as we return to our school routines!
We are excited to introduce two new staff members. Mrs. Poulin is our new Grade 5 teacher, and Mrs Brouilette, our new Educational Support Paraprofessional supporting our Special Education students in various grades.
Winter months bring cold weather and the possibility of indoor recess. We will now bring the younger students, grades K-2 back to their classrooms for indoor recess with a staff member while the older grades, 3-5, stay in the cafe. It is our hope to put together some bins of games and coloring for the students as well as our recent jump rope challenges. If anyone has any old board games that do not take too long to play or extra coloring books and crayons they would be willing to donate, I know both staff and students would appreciate having more to do. Please do not feel obligated to send anything in, just looking for some you may no longer use.
Important Reminders:
-
Parent Drop-off starts at 8:30 and we will continue to use the right hand sidewalk as you pull into the parking lot. We ask that everyone please remember to be careful when pulling away from the sidewalk since the buses will be coming in on the left side and we want to avoid any accidents.
-
Parent Pick-up starts at 3:15. As we all know, the parking lot is only so big and we share with Consentino buses which makes pick-up difficult. As a reminder, if you need to park your car and pick up your children, please do not park in the bus lane in front of Consentino before 3:05, at which time their buses should be gone. Also please do not park in front of Silver Hill in the bus loop before the yellow sign. We are continuing to work on finding a better solution for pick-up procedures. We appreciate everyone working together in the best interest of the students.
-
If you need to dismiss your child before 3:15, we need to ask that you please sign out your child in the main office. We need to have this information in the event something happens, so we can account for the whereabouts of all students during regular school hours of 9:00am – 3:15pm. We appreciate your help with this.

Parent volunteers are an integral part of the success of students at Silver Hill and your help is truly appreciated. Please remember to sign in at the front office before going into the classrooms you service each day.

Good Morning Silver Hill Families,
I hope everyone had a wonderful first week of winter break and is able to enjoy the holidays with family and friends. One more week of vacation ahead of us! Take time to relax and enjoy each other’s company!
Just thought I would share some ideas of ways to continually engage your children in learning both socially and academically while away from school.
Going along with our Sanford Harmony program for social emotional learning you could have everyone in the family share something they are grateful for each night at dinner or before going to bed. Create or build something together to build teamwork skills. Watch a movie together like “INSIDE OUT”, “FROZEN”, “FINDING NEMO”, “ARRIVAL” or “WONDER”.
For reading, enjoy a good book together. Take turns reading to each other. Ask your child how the story or a particular scene would be different if told from a different character’s point of view. Draw a picture of their favorite scene. Write a book recommendation to share with their class when they return to school.
For math, there are so many games that promote math and reasoning skills. Some of these are Yahtzee, Trouble, Mancala, Sorry, Life, Chutes and Ladders, and Apples to Apples. You could also cook/ bake with your children to help with fractions and measurement. Enjoy and have some fun together!
Finally, enjoy some physical activities together. Even just a nice walk on a cool day can get the energy level up for all!

Good Morning Silver Hill Families,
I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and is ready for a great week ahead!
Our Sanford Harmony program for social emotional learning is going strong! This past week, I was lucky enough to be invited to share in another “Buddy Up” activity in Ms. Alves third grade classroom. Students were writing and sharing stories using the spelling words for the week. Their stories were fantastic and their ability to work together and cheer each other on during the sharing time was a pleasure to take part in.
A special thank you to Mrs. Zylkuski and all the parent volunteers that helped to make our BOOK FAIR a HUGE success!
Thank you also to all staff and parents that took part in the Parent Teacher Conferences this past week. Building and sustaining a strong partnership will surely benefit all of our students!
Another thank you to the PTO and staff and parent volunteers
